Rectangular derivative remainders
This module gives a one-dimensional quadratic remainder bound with constant one half from explicit derivative witnesses and its iterated two-coordinate consequence. The latter converts a uniform mixed fourth-derivative envelope into a rectangular fourth-order bound.
Let f be a real function with derivative f₁ and second derivative f₂ at every point of the interval from 0 to a nonnegative endpoint a. If f₂ is bounded in absolute value by B on that interval, and both f and f₁ vanish at 0, then the value of f at a is at most B·a²/2 in absolute value.
Formal statement
Proof (Lean source)
Let F be a real function of two real variables and fix nonnegative amplitudes a and u. Suppose that, at the second argument u, F has partial derivative Fa in its first argument and Fa has partial derivative Faa in its first argument at every point of the interval from 0 to a; that on the rectangle 0 ≤ b ≤ a, 0 ≤ v ≤ u Faa has partial derivative FaaU in its second argument, FaaU has partial derivative FaaUU in its second argument, and FaaUU is bounded in absolute value by B; and that F and Fa vanish at the point (0, u), while Faa and FaaU vanish at (b, 0) for every b between 0 and a. Then the value of F at (a, u) is at most B·a²·u²/4 in absolute value.
